Goddess Kanyakumari is one of the forms of Mother Goddess Shakti in Hinduism. As Kanya Kumari, She is the virgin goddess. Both Kanya and Kumari means virgin. The popular belief is that she took the form of Kannyakumari to annihilate demon Banasura. Another legend has that she still remains in this form in the Kanyakumari Temple in Tamil Nadu in Southern tip of India due a broken marriage promise.

Demon Banasura had attained a boon that a virgin girl will only kill him. The demon believed that he could easily overpower a young virgin. After getting the boon, Banasura defeated the Devas and started numerous Adharmic activities.

Vishnu advised the Devas to pray to Goddess Shakti to find a solution. Goddess Shakti promised the Devas that She will restore Dharma by annihilating Banasura.

Goddess Shakti then appeared as a beautiful young girl on earth. Banasura who came to know about the beautiful girl decided to take her away forcibly. Goddess Kannyakumari easily overpowered the army that was sent to take her away.



Banasura sent numerous armies and demons overpower the Goddess. But all of them failed.

Finally, Banasura himself went into war with the Goddess. After a fierce battle, Goddess Kanyakumari used the Chakrayudham (disc) and killed the demon.

A legend associated with above story states that Shiva who came to know about the beauty of the Goddess Kanyakumari wanted to marry her in this form. But if the marriage takes place, She will no longer be a virgin and will not be able to kill Banasura.

To stop the marriage, Devas approached Sage Narada, who played a trick on Shiva. The marriage party was to reach Kanyakumari in South India at a particular time. The marriage party reached the vicinity on time but Sage Narada took the form of a cock and crowed. Shiva thought he had missed the auspicious time and returned.

Goddess Kanyakumari waited for Shiva for a long time. When Shiva did not turn up, She became furious and threw out all ornaments, vessels and food that was prepared for the marriage. Whatever the goddess threw out became seashells and sand. The abundance of colored seashells and sand at Kannyakumari Beach in Tamil Nadu in India is attributed to this legend.

Goddess Kanyakumari is worshipped as Kumari Amman and Devi Kannyakumari at the famous temple in Kannyakumari in Tamil Nadu.

Gajachayai is observed annually during the Mahalayam fortnight which falls before Ashwin Navratri (September – October). Gajachayai 2011 date is September 25. Pandava Panchami is associated with the exile of the Pandavas in the Mahabharata. Pandava Panchami 2011 date is October 31. Salt Lake FD Block Puja Committee – Theme is huge Durga Murti
The pandal and the 14.5 meter long murti are made out of environment friendly items. This is the tallest Durga idol in 2011.

Dum Dum Tarun Sangha – Flute and Hand held cymbals

The pandal is made from bansi (flute) and Mandira (Hand-held cymbals). Nearly 80,000 flutes are being used to make the pandal. The cymbals weigh around 4,500 kg.

Ahirtola Sangya – Victory of Good over Evil
Durga demolishing Mahishasura and the other demons form part of this Pandal.

Naktala Udayan Sangha – Flying Bird.
The pandal is in the shape of a flying bird and symbolize the flight of human mind.

Purbachal Shakti Sangha – Children
The pandal captures the imaginary world for children.

Telengabagan – Kolabau
The pandal reconstructs the nine types of trees that represent that nine images of Durga. Durga murti here is based on the Shibpuri woodcut painting. A highlight of the pandal is a water body with a tower of desire.

Dum Dum Park Yuvakbrinda – Sun and Space
At the pandal a 45-feet high egg is the main attraction. The outer shell is made of mirrors the yold inside is yellowish. Hundreds of paintings inside the pandal show children floating in empty space.

Lake Town Adhibasibrinda – Theme around trees
The entire theme in this pandal revolves around tree. Shadows of human beings are also depites as trees.

Garuda Vahanam seva is an important ritual in Tirupati Brahmotsavams held in TTD Venkateshwara temple. In 2011, Garuda Vahana seva is performed today, 3 October 2011, at 9’o clock in the night. It is performed on fifth day of Navratri Brahmotsavams. Lord Venkateswara is taken out in procession specially decorated with the Lord’s chief vehicle Garuda (Garuthmantha vahanam) as vehicle.

During the first event on this day, ‘Mohini Avatara Utsavam on Pallaki’ is performed in the morning. It has become a tradition for the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh to present new silk clothes to Lord Balaji marking the thanksgiving.

Triratri Vrata is a three-day Puja during Navratri Durga Puja. In 2011, Triratri Navratri Pooja begins on October 3 and ends on October 5. Usually, it begins on Maha Saptami with Saraswati Avahan and ends with Saraswati Balidan or visarjan on Mahanavami day. As last three days of Navratri are dedicated to Goddess Saraswati, it is also referred to as Saraswati Pujan.

The same rituals of Navratri are followed during Triratri Vrata. Kalasha Sthapana is performed before starting the puja on first day and Kalasha will be moved after the completion of Puja on third day. Those who unable to perform the Navratri Puja for nine days, would prefer Triratri Vrata observance.

Vijayadasami is the last day of the 10-day Dasara festival and the day after the nine-day Navratri festival. The murtis of Goddess Durga are immersed on the day. Vijayadasami 2023 date is October 6. Goddess Durga Murtis worshipped during Durga Puja are immersed in water on the day. Vijaya Dashami, also known as Dussehra, is a Hindu festival that usually falls in the month of October. Purnima, also known as Pournami or Poornima, is the full moon day in a traditional Hindu lunar calendar. In September 2011, the date of Purnima is October 11 and 12. The Purnima fasting is marked on October 11. The time of Poornima tithi is from 4:24 AM on October 11 to 6:27 AM on October 12. The Purnima in October 2011 is the Ashwin Purnima in most regions. In Tamil Calendar, it is the Purattassi Purnima.

October 11, 2011 is observed as Kojagari Lakshmi Purnima and Sharad Purnima.
