Soubhagyavati Shradh is observed on the ninth day of the Pitru Paksha fortnight and is dedicated to women who did not die as a widow. This Comes Every Year. It is observed during the waning phase of moon (Krishna Paksha) in Ashwin month. Soubhagyavati Shradh 2012 date is September 21. Soubhagya Vati Shradh rituals and rites are strictly followed for women who died when their husbands were alive.

In some regions, the no rituals are performed on the day. Instead food or meal is offered to the married woman’s soul. Some people also feed a Sumangali (married women) on the day.

Soubhagyavati rituals vary from region to region and from community to community. But in all regions on the day, Shradh is performed for one's mother or any other woman in the family, who did not die a widow.

In the rituals, instead of deities, demigods known as dhurilochan whose eyes remain half closed are invoked. Dhuri means smoke and lochan means eyes; their eyes remain half closed due to smoke.

 Vat Savitri Vrat fasting is for three days. It begins on the Trayodashi day and ends on Amavasi – the fast is for three nights and ends on the fourth day. Prayers and pujas are dedicated to Vat Vriksha (Banyan Tree) and Savitri.

But nowadays most women only fast on the Amavasi day.

 It must be noted that in some regions, Vat Savitri Vrat is also observed on the Jyeshta Purnima day (full moon day), especially in Western parts of India – Gujarat and Maharashtra and this is known as Vat Purnima.

Siddheshwara Temple, locally known as Behula Temple, is a 11th century temple dedicated to Shiva. It is located at Bahulara near Bishnupur in Bankura District, West Bengal.

The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) protects the temple as it is considered as a classic example of terracotta style of temples. It is also a rare surviving terracotta temple that was built before the invasion of the region by Muslim rulers. The temple is located on the western bank of Darakeshwar River and has murtis of Ganesha, Durga and Shiva.

After viewing the Kanni, it is time for a ritualistic bath. After the bath, it is time to draw the ‘Kolam’ or Rangoli (Tamil New Year Kolams). The ‘kolam’ is believed to bring good fortune to the famil members. Then, the doorways are decorated with mango leaves.

After this the family assembles for prayers. The prayers begin with the lighting of the traditional lamp (kuthu vilakku).

The lamp is placed next to a brass bowl with a short neck, which contains water and is decorated with mango leaves – called the niraikudum.

Then, it is time to head to the nearby temples to seek the blessings of the Gods. In some temples, people gather to listen to the Tamil Panchangam, which contains the predictions of the coming year.

For people in northern parts of India, especially the Sikhs, Baisakhi is a mega event - it is a religious festival, harvest festival and New Year's Day all rolled into one. In April, this day marks the beginning of the Hindu solar New Year. In fact, this day is celebrated all over the country as New Year day, under different names. For the Sikh community, Baisakhi has a very special meaning. It was on this day that their tenth and last Guru - Guru Gobind Singh - organized the Sikhs into Khalsa or the 'pure ones'. By doing so, he eliminated the differences of high and low and established that all human beings are equal.

Sikhs assign quite a different meaning to Baisakhi, and if you happen to be in a Punjabi village to catch the men performing the wild bhangra dance, you'll get the clear picture. This strenuous dance tells the story of the agricultural process, from tilling the soil through harvesting. As the dholak (drum) changes beats, the dancing sequence progresses, dramatizing plowing, sowing, weeding, reaping, and finally celebrating. Baisakhi also commemorates the day in 1689 when Guru Gobing Singh founded the Khalsa, the fighting Sikh brotherhood that donned the distinctive Sikh outfits.
Sikhs visit temples, such as the Golden Temple in Amritsar, where the holy Granth is read, commemorating the day on which the Guru asked five volunteers to offer their lives, then took them one at a time into a tent. He emerged each time with a bloody sword, although he had in fact sacrificed a goat. In honor the "Beloved Five," a series of parades are held, in which sets of five men walk in front of the holy book with swords drawn. When the ceremony is over, a round of feasting, music-making, and dancing begins, amid the blossoming flowers and harvested grain.
Baisakhi has special significance for two of India's major religious groups. For the Hindus, it is the start of the New Year, and is celebrated with requisite bathing, partying, and worshipping. It's believed that thousands of years ago, Goddess Ganga descended to earth and in her honor, many Hindus gather along the sacred Ganges River for ritual baths. The action is centered in the holy cities along the Ganges in north India, or in Srinagar's Mughal Gardens, Jammu's Nagbani Temple, or anywhere in Tamil Nadu. Hindus plant poles (wrapped in flags of god-embroidered silk) in front of their homes, and hang pots of brass, copper or silver on top.
Children wear garlands of flowers and run through the streets singing "May the new year come again and again!" In Kerala, the festival is called 'Vishu'. It includes fireworks, shopping for new clothes and interesting displays called 'Vishu Kani'. These are arrangements of flowers, grains, fruits, cloth, gold, and money are viewed early in the morning, to ensure a year of prosperity. In Assam, the festival is called Bohag Bihu, and the community organizes massive feasts, music and dancing.

Dedicated to Hindu God Vishnu, Ekadashi Vrat is observed on the eleventh day of a fortnight in a Hindu lunar calendar. Ekadashi dates in April 2012 – April 3 and April 17 (on April 16, 2012 Smarta sect). Fasting from sunrise to next day morning sunrise is generally observed by many Hindus. Some observe the fast from the start time of Ekadasi Tithi and break the fast at the beginning of Dwadasi Tithi.

Purmandal Mela and Festival in Jammu and Kashmir

Purmandal Temples are dedicated to Shiva and the annual mela and festival is held during Phalgun Krishna Paksha Trayodasi and Chaturdasi and coincides with the Shivratri. Parashuram Kund Snan on Makar Sankranti in Tezu in Arunachal Pradesh

Parashuram Kund or lake is located near Tezu in Arunachal Pradesh and thousands of people perform holy bath here during Makar Sankranti. In 2012, Makar Sankranti Snan is on the morning of January 15. As per Kalika Purana, Parashuram, the six avatar of Hindu God Vishnu, washed away the sin of killing of his mother (Goddess Renuka) by bathing in the waters of this lake also known as Brahma kund.

Devotees after taking holy dip also visit the remains of an ancient temple at Malinithan on the day. The temple is dedicated to Shiva. Malinithan is located near Likhabali on the northern bank of the Brahmaputra.
